DUNHILL Black Lacquer & Gold Plated Rollagas Lighter – New Repair

This lighter was repaired for a client who never paid for the repair so we are recouping our costs and giving one lucky person to be the owner of this new repaired Dunhill Rollagas.

The lighter was fully serviced, with all faulty and worn/broken parts replaced.

History :

In the 1950s, Dunhill embarked on a transformative journey, redefining the essence of luxury by harmonising superior engineering with aesthetic elegance. Rather than simply adorning standard models with precious metals, the Maison sought to build a lighter that surpassed all predecessors in both performance and form. From this relentless pursuit of excellence, the Rollagas was conceived—initially as a coveted limited edition in 1953, before ascending to the permanent collection in 1956.

What truly solidified the Rollagas as a masterpiece of artisanal craftsmanship was the introduction of its iconic black lacquer and gold-plated finish. This pairing represents the pinnacle of refined luxury:
  • Hand-Applied Natural Lacquer: Each lighter features deep, lustrous black lacquer panels, still applied by hand today through a patient, multi-layered process. This creates an unblemished, glass-like beauty that is almost entirely acid-proof and exceptionally sturdy.
  • Gold-Plated Precision: The lacquer is framed by warm, 24k gold-plated trim, creating a bold, sophisticated contrast that has made this specific aesthetic a favourite among the world’s elite.
  • Historic Hallmarks: On many of these exquisite pieces, the black lacquer serves as a canvas for raised gold hallmarks—including the “AD” monogram, the bulldog logo, and “1893,” the year of Dunhill’s founding—elevating the lighter from a tool to a true collector’s objet d’art.
Beyond its visual allure, the Rollagas revolutionised the ritual of the flame. By utilising a regulated butane delivery system instead of traditional flint and wick, it provided a cleaner, more reliable ignition across all climates. Combined with the signature knurled thumbwheel and the satisfying “clink” of its concealed hinge, the Rollagas remains an enduring icon of 20th-century design.
